Fredriksvern Naval Shipyard – where history meets culture
22 October 2026
From naval shipyard and military base to art, culture and vibrant gathering places. Fredriksvern Naval Shipyard has a history spanning more than 250 years.
Towering old ash trees, historic moats, centuries-old buildings and lush green spaces. The moment you walk through the gates of Fredriksvern Naval Shipyard, you sense that this is a place with an atmosphere all its own.
History is everywhere. In the buildings, along the old ramparts and in the sturdy trunks of ancient trees. And just a stone’s throw away lies the sea, which has played a vital role in the shipyard’s history for centuries.
A history dating back to 1750
In the heart of Stavern lies one of Norway’s best-preserved 18th-century military sites.
The story began in 1750, when King Frederick V decided to establish a naval shipyard and fleet base here. Fredriksvern later became the main base of the Norwegian Navy, and for generations, the area was shaped by soldiers, sailors, craftsmen and military life.
Over the years, Fredriksvern served all branches of the Norwegian Armed Forces. But in 2002, more than 250 years of permanent military activity came to an end.
Historic buildings, new Life
Today, the old buildings have found new purposes. Where military activity once dominated, you will now find artists, cultural organisations and local associations. History provides the setting, while new initiatives help keep the area alive.
Fredriksvern Naval Shipyard has become a place where people come together, experiences are shared and history continues to unfold in new ways.
A place for life’s little moments
But the shipyard is not just a venue for major events and cultural experiences.
For many, it is also a place to enjoy life’s little golden moments. A leisurely stroll among the historic buildings. A quiet break on a sun-warmed bench. A refreshing swim, a peaceful moment or an unexpected encounter with art.
Here, there is room for relaxation, inspiration and a sense of community, whatever the season.
Fredriksvern Naval Shipyard is more than a historic site. It is a place where the past remains visible, while new stories continue to be written.
