Stavern – Norway’s Little Gem
22 October 2026
From sailors and soldiers to artists and musicians. This charming coastal town on the Skagerrak coast has a fascinating history, proud traditions and a character all its own.
White wooden houses, narrow streets, the scent of the sea and sun-warmed rocks. Stavern has a special way of making people slow down and unwind. Perhaps it’s the light, the closeness to the sea or the warm, welcoming atmosphere.
Stavern has long been known as “Norway’s Smile”. A cliché, perhaps? But it’s one we, along with many others, are rather fond of. And it’s easy to see why.
Because Stavern is so much more than sunshine, summer days and smooth coastal rocks. Here, history, art, music and traditions come together in a unique blend. All year round.
From Maritime Town to Artists’ Haven
Stavern’s maritime history stretches back several centuries. As early as the time of the famous naval hero Tordenskiold, the town played an important role in Norway’s naval defence. In 1750, King Frederick V decided to establish the Fredriksvern Naval Shipyard, which later became the main base of the Norwegian Navy.
The distinctive yellow buildings and historic moats still tell the story of a time when soldiers, sailors and craftsmen shaped everyday life in the town.
But Stavern was also destined to become known for something entirely different.
When the artists’ summer academy was established on Citadelløya in the early 20th century, Stavern gained an important place in Norwegian art history. Prominent artists such as Christian Krohg helped establish the town’s reputation as a summer retreat for artists.
Over time, a thriving artistic community emerged, and Stavern became known as the artists’ town by the sea.
Art, Music and Living Traditions
Stavern’s artistic heritage lives on. During Easter, summer and autumn, the town and the historic Fredriksvern Naval Shipyard come alive with art exhibitions and visitors. Music, summer theatre and festivals are also an important part of the town’s vibrant cultural scene.
A Town to Fall in Love With
In summer, life spills onto the waterfront, through the streets and into the outdoor cafés and restaurants. Boats fill the harbour, laughter comes easily, and long, bright summer evenings turn into cherished memories.
But Stavern has a charm of its own throughout the year. When autumn storms sweep in from the sea, when the soft winter light falls across the old wooden houses, and when the spring sunshine brings the town back to life.
Because Stavern is not simply a place you visit. It is a place you experience, grow to love and long to return to.
